Q: What’s the first thing I should do?

A: The very first thing you need for a web site is a domain name – such as “mywebsite.com”. This is your unique web address and once you register it, it’s yours for as long as you renew it. If you don’t already have a domain name, get it now. Even if you think it will be several months before you’re ready to put a site together, get it now. You would be amazed at how quickly these are being scooped up. It only costs about $12 per year to own the domain, so get it now! I recommend using GoDaddy. They’re very competitive and their customer service is excellent.

If you need any help or further advice, please call me, I’ll be glad to guide you through the process. Just don’t ask me to get the domain for you. It’s in your best interest that the domain be in your name. If someone else offers to get it for you, just say “No thank you”. Hosting, site content, etc. can all be taken care of by someone else, but this is the one thing over which you should have complete control.

If you already have a domain, are you certain it’s in your name? If not, call me. I can tell you who the administrator is and help get it back if it’s not you.
